Juslin and Vastfjall (2008) explored the prevalence of underlying psychological mechanisms when music elicits an emotion in a listener. Nine mechanisms were gradually developed (Juslin, 2013; Juslin, Harmat, & Eerola, 2014; Juslin, Liljeström, Västfjäll, & Lars-Olov, 2010) as the BRECVEMA framework, specifically: 1. Indeed, emotional responses to music show many hallmarks of basic emotions including distinct subjective experience, emotional expression, action tendencies, changes in the autonomic nervous system activation (Juslin and Vastfjall 2008) and distinct effects of thought and judgment (Vuoskoski and Eerola 2012). Liljestrom, Juslin, & Vastfjall, 2013) or impairs emotions by interfering with the attentional processing of music (Sutherland et al., 2009). In addition, it is possible that group music listening may selectively facilitate prosocial emotions such as happiness–elation, pleasure–enjoyment, and admiration–awe (Juslin et al., 2008; ‪Professor of Psychology, Uppsala University‬ - ‪‪Cited by 19,895‬‬ - ‪Music Perception‬ - ‪Nonverbal Communication‬ - ‪Music and Emotions‬ - ‪Music Psychology‬ - ‪Music Performance‬ body temperature (Eerola & Vouskoski, 2011ab; Juslin et al., 2014; Juslin & Vastfjall, 2008; Zentner et al., 2008). For example, Lundqvist and colleagues (2009) reported emotion-consistent changes on a range of physiological measures of ERM, including changes in facial expression, heart rate, skin conductance and finger temperature.

We discussed this issue previously in Juslin and Laukka (Reference Juslin and Laukka 2004) and proposed, based on our prevalence findings, a list of 15 terms that could be useful in measuring musical emotions. This list is quite similar to the terms included in the emotion scale subsequently presented by Zentner et al. (in press).
